NASCAR: COCA COLA 600 WAGERING PREVIEW
The NASCAR schedule offers up the longest and one of the most anticipated of the Nextel Cup Series season. The fastest sport on earth will be camping out at Lowe's Motor Speedway for another week in preparation of this weekend's Coca-Cola 600. Last week saw the annual running of the Nextel All-Star Challenge at the same venue, when points were of no concern for drivers but the stakes were raised none the less. Over one million dollars was at stake as a selected field of competitors took the track for short run, wide open racing. With the Nextel Cup Series points chase back underway this week, hot feuds such as the one between top ten contenders Tony Stewart and Matt Kennseth will not be in need of additional fuel. Focus must be maintained though as the field of two and deeper in the chase have a task before them that no one has done since 2003.
That task that challenge for all drivers on the track save one is to have anyone but Jimmie Johnson, the current Nextel point's leader, finish first in the NASCAR race results. Jimmie Johnson has taken the checkered flag at five of the last six events run at LMS. The last to do it was Tony Stewart in 2003. 2003 was also the last time that a driver won both the All-Star Challenge, which Johnson did last weekend and the Coca-Cola 600. Consequently, the last person to do it…you guessed it…Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has owned Lowe's Motor Speedway in a way that harkens back to the days of "The King" Richard Petty at Richmond. Fitting as the #48 team is plastered with the same logo as the track and more than one of the driver's competitors have made mention of the correlation.
NASCAR odds may have never been more influenced by the combination of a driver's current streak of success and history of winning at a track. Jimmie Johnson has his car and team in a rare sync this season living in the top 10 and leading the circuit in wins. These hard facts combined that NASCAR bets against Johnson at Lowe's Motor Speedway in recent years have been flushed cash lead to obvious conclusions of their own. Yet in a sport where surprise in a planned on factor, anything can, has and will happen.
