NASCAR CROWN ROYAL 400 WAGERING PREVIEW
The Crown Royal 400 is the next stop on the NASCAR schedule and again NASCAR fans are treated to a prime time event. A battered and weary field of drivers will be taking on the challenge of this race after coming off of a short week. With Talladega being rained out Sunday and ran on Monday afternoon, NASCAR teams have even less time to prepare for the upcoming battle under the lights Saturday May 6 at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond Virginia. As the ninth race of the season with a prime time billing, the Crown Royal 400 will see an increase in NASCAR wagering and odds look to be towards the trends and the streaks to determine their picks.
No driver is hotter right now that Jimmie Johnson. This is due not only to his recent win at Talladega, but his consistency of success in NASCAR race results this year. Johnson has failed to finish in the top 10 in only two races, has finished in the top 5 in over half run and has taken the checkered in a third of them. The #48 Lowe's Chevrolet is the machine to beat on the Richmond track Saturday.
The track at Richmond is on of the truly fascinating on the NASCAR schedule. The ¾ mile oval is a mutant demanding both precision and skill from a driver while offering the room to bang and trade paint. RIR is not an easy venue to pass at. This is shown clearly by noting only one driver starting lower than 10th position in qualifying has won in the past ten races there (Matt Kenseth 2002 "25th").
No one driver has established continual dominance at Richmond recently. So it will be difficult for odds makers to place their lines based on repeat success. The last back to back of races at RIR was Terry Labonte over 20 years ago. Tony Stewart however has visited the winner's circle three times since 1999, offering the biggest claim to ownership of RIR in recent years. Still, this is a far cry from "The King" Richard Petty taking 5 out of 6 six races at Richmond in the early 1970's. Regardless of outcome, The Crown Royal 400 will undoubtedly be one of the most watched and most entertaining races offered this NASCAR season.
