Dover International Speedway in the capital of unassuming Delaware is oddly enough the home of one of the most historic and captivating stops on the NASCAR schedule. To say that Dover was not a friendly track to new drivers in its earliest years would be a drastic understatement. Through an eleven-year stretch (1969-1980), only one race run at DIS was not won by a past or future NASCAR series champion. The Winner's Circle at the track was a court held by a veritable who's who of NASCAR fame. Names like Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, David Pearson and Benny Parsons were known winners at Dover. But the two who did the job with most success at the venue are Bobby Allison, the patriarch of the famous racing family and "The King" Richard Petty, both with seven career victories at Dover.
As unique as the NASCAR race results are at Dover International Speedway, the NASCAR history that is held within is more impressive. DIS held the honor of playing host to the first NASCAR race held after the tragic events of September 11, 2003. Fittingly, NASCAR's icon at the time, Dale Earnhardt won the race in a fashion all his own and paid tribute to America on his victory lap, brandishing a massive American flag. This moment is noted as one of the greatest in sports history.
Dover may be the only track that has a unique mystique without a driver on the track. DIS was the first Speedway in NASCAR to sport the white all concrete look. A diversity that is not only a switch for fans, but a surface foreign to the drivers as well. But despite its locale and uninformed appearance, there are few venues in any sport that stack up to the incredible history production of Dover International Speedway.
