INFINEON RACEWAY
The NASCAR schedule takes many twists and turns throughout the season. One stop in particular provides some of the greatest twists and turns for stock car drivers. Infineon Raceway in picturesque Sonoma California is a diversion from the oval tracks that dominate NASCAR. The 1.99 winding road course was built in the 1960's to accommodate open wheel races and offers a distinct set of challenges to the NASCAR driver and team. Infineon has seen its share of challenges as a successful venue over the decades, but has emerged as one of the more popular stops on the Nextel Cup Series.
After its creation, the raceway changed hands and owners for the better part of a decade a steady audience was searched for to keep the venue in the green. Eventually in 1970 the then owners of the track shut down Infineon citing $300,000.00 in losses. The track was revitalized a few years later by land developers and after being sold and bought a few more times landed under the care of Skip Berg. Berg brought the track to NASCAR and in 1989 the first scheduled Winston Cup race was run at Infineon Raceway. Ricky Rudd took the checkered flag and started a tradition in Sonoma.
The inherent trouble with a road course for stock cars is room to pass. Drivers do not reach high speeds for long duration and drafting is nearly impossible with short straight-aways, so teams must with good starting positions have a strong chance of taking checkered flags. This is evident when considering that in the past 10 races at the track four races have been won from the pole and seven from the top five starting positions. In fact in that stretch no car has been to victory lane with a starting position higher than 7th.
NASCAR odds should ride heavily on Jeff Gordon at Infineon. Gordon has won four of the last ten races and has taken as many poles in the same span. Gordon won back to back to back events at Sonoma from 1998-2000 and has a feel for the course that makes NASCAR wagering against him seem silly.
