NASCAR DRIVERS

MARK MARTIN
Mark Martin is enjoying the twilight of one of the most storied careers in NASCAR history. Looking through the annals of racing legend it may not be possible to find a name credited with as much consistency of success as Martin's. Mark's career is as old as NASCAR itself, dating back to the late seventies and early eighties. He experienced the same tribulations as the sport he has loved. When tracks were going bankrupt and sponsors were dropping and switching drivers from month to month, Martin was a part of it all. His name is as much the fabric of NASCAR racing as that of Petty, Yarborough, Allison, or Earnhardt.

Mark Martin began racing at the around the age of 16 in his home of Arkansas on dirt tracks. Martin's knack for racing proved obvious almost immediately and following a successful three-year stint on the dirt, made the transition to the ASA. Martin excelled further here taking rookie of the year honors in 1977 and 3-peating as champion of the series from 1978-80. From there, the big time awaited. In 1981 Martin tackled the Cup series in his own car and ran broken schedules for the next few years trying to find sponsors.

Following a fourth ASA Championship in 1986, Martin tasted victory in the Busch Series for the first time. He had three different wins that year and 13 top ten finishes. The Busch Series proved to be the most comfortable setting for Martin's talents throughout his career. Martin is the current record holder for wins and shares the record for poles in the racing league.

Martin's NASCAR Nextel Cup Series career has been one of runner-ups and near misses. In 1998, a seven win season for Martin, he finished second in points to Jeff Gordon who had double digit wins in a league he was then dominating. Closer still was the 2002 NASCAR results showing Martin finishing 38 points behind that year's champion Tony Stewart. It has been however, his consistency to finish near the top year in and year out (below 12th in points only twice in 17 years) which has made him a favorite for Rousch Racing and fans alike. It will be a sad day for NASCAR when Martin is not convinced to come back another year.
