MATT KENSETH
Matt Kenseth, the Rousch Racing driver of the #17 Dewalt Tools Ford, was seemingly destined for racing greatness from a young age. At 13 Kenseth was working on his first race car and five short years later was setting the racing world on its ear. Matt tore through every circuit and track that booked races in his home state of Wisconsin prior to breaking into the NASCAR All Pro Series in 1995. To no one's surprise, Kenseth was sitting on a launch pad to a fast track to fame in NASCAR history.
Matt Kenseth picked up a ride in the Busch Series in 1997 with Reiser Enterprises. The splash was big including earning second place in the Rookie of the Year competition. His next year, a full stint in the Busch Series was far more impressive, this time landing as runner up in the Busch Series point's championship. It was when Kenseth was asked to take over for Bill Eliot in the then Winston Cup Series that the flood gates on his accolade filled career began.
Not knowing how to fail was a quality no one was prepared to have such an impact as early as it did on Matt Kenseth's performance in NASCAR. He spent 1999 wearing the two hats of Winston and Busch series driver and in 2000 made the full transition to the big leagues. As a rookie, Kenseth won the Coca-Cola 600, finished in the top ten eleven times and finished right outside the top ten in the Winston Cup points race in route to Rookie of Year honors.
The highlights are numerous for someone in the sport of NASCAR for less than a decade. The greatest easily was Kenseth and the #17 team taking the last ever Winston Cup Series Championship in 2003. The feat itself is awe inspiring, but what makes it so special was the manner in which it was done. Kenseth only won one race the whole season (UAW Chrysler 400) but had a level of consistency previously unseen in the sport, landing in the top 10 23 times through the NASCAR season. With what is widely regarded as the best pit crew in NASCAR and a skill level comparable to the greats of the sport's history, watch for Kennseth to continue his run to the Hall of Fame.
