Pocono Raceway may have one of the greatest stories of survival of any racetrack in the world. Known to some as "the little Tri-Oval that could", the now famous race track in Long Pond, PA faced certain doom in many forms prior to its accession to the top tier of NASCAR tracks. This would turn out to be a drop in the bucket of woes for the track's owners (Mattiolis) however as an ensuing stifled economy in tandem with energy shortage threatened the couple with bankruptcy. But as was the tune of the time in NASCAR, mogul Bill France and his son Bill France Jr. saved the track from obscurity, this time however encouragement instead of funding. The result is a NASCAR venue that draws almost a quarter of a million to its gates yearly.
Pocono's lore goes far past that of it's troubled times however as NASCAR fans don't travel to a track for history lessons, but rather to see it made. For its size and shape, speeds at Pocono Raceway have been amazing throughout history and continue today. Just two years ago Kasey Kahne, in the #9 Dodge set a qualifying speed record of 172.53mph at Pocono. Interestingly, the most successful driver at Pocono also used to man the wheel of the #9 Dodge. Bill Elliot won the five races at Pocono in his illustrious career and is the only driver to ever win there twice from the pole.
Now the track to be young on with first or second year drivers taking the past five races at the even, Pocono Raceway, with its trouble behind it can continue doing what it does best, breeding legends.
