Formerly Strawberry Hill Raceway, Richmond International Raceway has enjoyed a long history of racing that predates the Winston Cup Circuit. Back in 1946 races were held on a half-mile dirt oval in the same spot. Today RIR is a major Virginia attraction. Besides the NASCAR bets that are influenced by events track, the surrounding Richmond Raceway Complex hosts dozens of seasonal and yearly events from Sports Card shows to radio station sponsored concerts. However the real excitement from RIR comes when the NASCAR odds are made on one of the two races held there annually.

But while the new blood has taken the torch at RIR, the high water mark still belongs to the venerable Dale Jarrett who set both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series average race speed records in the late 1990s (108.7 and 104.92 respectively). One thing is certain, when the lights go down at Richmond International Raceway in NASCAR seasons to come, all of Virginia will be lit up with the myriad of starts trying to outshine one and other on one of the grandest old tracks in racing
