NASCAR SUBWAY 500 WAGERING PREVIEW
The 2006 NASCAR Cup Series rolls into gorgeous Phoenix Arizona this weekend where a highly competitive group will run the Subway Fresh 500. The Phoenix International Raceway has become one of the favorite stops on NASCAR's circuit for fans, drivers, and teams alike. This year's race comes at a point of high drama in the NASCAR world. Jimmie Johnson is sitting atop the Nextel Cup Series points standings and shows no sign of slowing his run away from the pack. PIR (Phoenix International Raceway) is difficult track to come from behind on however and much will be decided on Thursday April 20 when qualifying takes place.
Kurt Busch hopes to use this race as the last rung to the top of the point's standings and position himself for a run at a second Championship in three years (2004). Busch is currently second in the point's standings and the Subway Fresh 500 has come right on time for the #2 Miller Lite Dodge team. Last year the Busch team stood tall in the winner's circle. A good spot in qualifying this Thursday could prime Busch and his crew for a repeat victory and a climb up a top spot when the third annual Chase for the Cup. A win this weekend would give Busch the fourth set of back to back victories at PIR. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton and Davey Allison are the only racers to complete that feat in Phoenix.
Last year's Subway Fresh 400 was noted as one of the most exhilarating races of the NASCAR season. Kurt Busch starting from the second qualifying position raced hard against Michael Waltrip who had battled up from the back of the field, starting in the 28th spot. Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brian Vickers in the #25 car rounded out the top five. The race's pole sitter, Jeff Gordon fell out of the top ten earning a disappointing 12th place finish for his #24 DuPont team. The top ten did include Bobby Labonte (6th), Carl Edwards (7th), the rookie Kyle Busch (8th), Johnny Sauter (9th) and Joe Nemechek (10th).
With emotions at an all time boiling point this NASCAR season and the field being strewn with top level competitors the 2006 Subway Fresh 500 at Phoenix International Raceway will see prove once again Nextel Cup Stock Car Racing to be the top draw in sports entertainment today.
