Talladega Superspeedway TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY
Some NASCAR races go by with a median amount of fanfare throughout the NASCAR season. The races ran at Talladega Superspeedway are not part of such a group. The 2.66 mile Tri-oval opened in Alabama in the fall of 1969 and since then has been a pen for the NASCAR record books. Built for the sole purpose of testing the metal of stock car racing's upper echelon, Talladega is the fastest of the fast tracks. The luminosity of the Superspeedway's history is one of the beacons which has lead new fans to NASCAR in recent decades.

Built by NASCAR legend Bill France, who takes credit as well for Daytona SuperSpeedway, Talladega was deemed too fast to race safely on at one point by the now defunct Professional Drivers Association. Tire companies scrambled in the 1960s and 1970s to produce a polymer that remained in tact for any time under the extreme conditions of stock car speeds on that track and the heat of Alabama asphalt. Despite adjustments for fan safety to the track, the cars still turned unparalleled fast laps at Talladega and none faster during a race than Bill Elliot's 1997 (pre restrictor-plate) record of 212.81mph.

NASCAR odds makers have long had a difficult time picking winners at Talladega. The racing is so tight that the track is known for its field clearing crashes often involving dozen or more cars. Since the implementation of the restrictor-plates, packs of cars will bunch up in order to draft ahead of each other and the potential for a "big one" is omnipresent.

Talladega is not just known for the speed at which drivers go on the track. One of the most amazing NASCAR race results ever was the win by then rookie Ron Bouchard on the final straight away on the final lap of the 1981 UAW-Ford 500. Bouchard passed both Terry Labonte and Darrell Waltrip to take the checkered flag in what is still considered one of the greatest finishes in NASCAR racing history. As the engines are started and NASCAR bets are wagered in seasons to come for these races in is inevitable another page of NASCAR lore will be filled by stories of the Talladega SuperSpeedway.
